VARAC 2009 Vintage Racing Festival
May 16, 2009

The Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) announces the running of its 31st Annual Vintage Festival, to be held at the world-renowned Mosport International Raceway, June 19, 20, 21, 2009. This technically demanding, very fast 2.459 mile track is just one hour northeast of Toronto.

This year’s feature will be a special celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Mini.  There will also be a feature for German cars as well as the popular one hour Enduro race.

On and off the track spectators will enjoy seeing cars from the 1950’s to the 80’s, including formula cars, sports racers, and examples from MG, Austin Healey, Lotus, Jaguar, Porsche, BMW, Mini, Datsun and many more. And let’s not forget the great free Vintage Car Show in the infield. In addition the Toronto Triumph Club’s annual Concourse and Participants Choice car show will take place on Mosport’s grounds inside the famed Standard Triumph Gate.

The best news is that all spectators can get up close and personal with the cars and their drivers. Almost every area is accessible and drivers are more than willing to talk about their pride and joy. Youngsters will enjoy meeting the drivers and being photographed with the race cars.

Extensive camping is also free with washroom and shower facilities. Check out www.varac.ca for more information.  Or call Festival Chairman John Greenwood at (905) 723 9334.
See you at the track!

Gord Lowe Passes Away
January, 2008

Gord Lowe
1944-2008

All of us at VARAC are deeply saddened by the recent death of Gord Lowe, long time vintage racer and a championship winner on motor cycles and in both the Bulova Series in the 70's and more recently in the Formula Ford series. He started racing Mini Coopers in the 60's and when he retired from that, with the arrival of son Arron, for the next 20 years he participated in a number of motorcycle sports and was Ontario 125cc Trials Champion several times on a Sammy Miller Honda. Gord also owned and raced a CL-16 class dinghy. He later came back to vintage and formula racing in his 1962 Lotus Super Seven and a 1982 Reynard Formula Ford. Gord was 63 years old and had recently battled cancer. Gord, Karen and their kids Arron and Sara were vacationing in Tobago when Gord took ill and died of a pulmonary embolism on New Years Day, 2008. Gord was a great friend and mentor to many of us in VARAC and he will be deeply missed by his friends and fellow racers.

VARAC 2007 Vintage Festival
Feb 15, 2007

Interest in the VARAC's Fortieth Anniversary of Formula 1 at Mosport is growing every day. With entries starting to come in, it is apparent that there is going to be a strong Canadian flavor to the event. Most evident of these is the entry by Maurice McCaig, from Calgary Alberta, of his '77 Wolf WR4, originally driven by Jody Schecter. A Canadian in a Canadian Car, the only thing that could be better would be to have Villeneuve driving. While not yet confirmed there is a strong possibility that the sister car to WR4, now on exhibit in the museum of the Canadian MotorSport Hall of Fame, will be "freshened" and will take a place beside McCaig's car, bringing the two cars back together for the first time in many years.  [Full Story]

TWO HISTORIC FORMULA ONE CARS RETURN TO MOSPORT
FOR THE
FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF FORMULA ONE IN CANADA

The Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) today announced that the McLaren/BRM driven to seventh place in the 1967 Canadian grand Prix will be taking part in the Fortieth Anniversary of the Canadian Grand Prix Celebrations. Now owned by Bruce McCaw, the car made its maiden appearance at the 1967 Canadian Grand Prix. In a classic "if only" McLaren could have won, but had decided to run without an alternator. Perhaps, with it being a "wet" race and having to have the running light on, it drew more current than was calculated, but the battery went flat, and the time lost in fitting a replacement put Mclaren back to seventh. Surely to be one of the stars of the weekend!   [Full Story]

WALLIE'S BACK !

VARAC today confirmed that Wallie Branston will serve as Honorary Starter for the Fortieth Anniversary Formula One Reunion at Mosport June 22-24 2007. Wallie was the starter for the all the professional races at Mosport for over fifteen years and had the honor of waving the checkered for Jack Brabham at that historic first Grand Prix. Being the starter is not his only claim to fame though. During the late forties and early fifties his skill as a stock car driver earned him a spot in the Canadian MotorSports Hall of Fame.

VARAC is delighted to have Wallie on board to share his experience and undoubtedly provide us with some great memories of that first Grand Prix

VARAC 2007 Vintage Festival
By Jeremy Sale

With another year now behind us we are already looking forward to seeing our vintage racing friends at the VARAC 2007 Festival at Mosport, June 22-24, 2007. As someone said, "T his is our 28th annual Festival, so by now we know how to do it!" I always use a capital "F" on Festival by the way, because that's how important I think it is. The big apple. Our chance to entertain vintage racers from Canada and the U.S at one of THE great race tracks in the world. [Full Story]
