VARAC G70+ Updates and News
April 2005

The racing season is finally upon us!!! The weather has turned, I’m hearing many, many stories of cars that are getting prepped and our first race of the season is right around the corner! I can hardly wait – if the size of the overflowing G70+ email inbox is any indication – we’re going to have a lot of fun this year! (ok, ok… I’m a little biased – among the many new (old!) cars coming out this year are two more 240z’s). Keep the emails and phone calls coming, let us know how we can help out… Read on – there’s a lot of important and exciting news this month!

News Flash! April 16th – CASC Pre-Season Tech Inspection

CASC has just posted details that they will be holding a pre-season scrutineering for the 2005 race season on Saturday, April 16th at Krikorian & Co, 1 Valleywood Dr. Unit #4 in Markham (www.casc.on.ca/images/krikorianmap.bmp). Scrutineering will be conducted from 9AM to 1PM at the latest and VARAC cars that can’t make it out to VARAC’s Dunville event the following weekend for a tech inspection are more than welcome.

May 7th - VARAC Fun Day at Dunville

Sign up now for the VARAC Fun Day at the Dunville Autodrome on Saturday May 7th. There will be racecar testing, racecar lapping, controlled street car lapping with passengers (bring your spouse!), annual technical inspections, novice classroom sessions and even a tasty BBQ. All for the ridiculously low price of $129. (pre-entry fee). www.varac.ca/events.html for more information. Jon Brett and myself are planning to be there to meet up with any G70+ participants who want to get a leg up on dusting off the cobwebs.

2005 VARAC Racing Schedule – WHO’s COMING???

VARAC has implemented a great new feature on its website and it is fantastic! If you go to www.varac.ca/events.html you can click on a link under each event that shows who is planning on attending the events. This is not a firm commitment or an official registration – it is simply a great way for people to see who else is planning on coming out. Email me (LDDALE@hotmail.com) to let me know what events you think you’ll be attending and we’ll add you to the list! (The list is just starting so the names are just coming in – don’t delay!)

  • May 7 – VARAC fun day at Dunville
  • May 14, 15 – BEMC Spring Trophy at Mosport (optional test day May 13)
  • June 4, 5 (Historic/Vintage cars ONLY – not G70+) at Shannonville
  • June 24 to 26 (optional test day June 23) – VARAC Vintage Festival at Mosport
  • July 9, 10 (Historic/Vintage cars ONLY – not G70+) at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex
  • August 13, 14 – BARC Canadian Touring Trophy at Mosport (optional test day August 12)
  • August 27, 28 – CRDA/VARAC Regional at Mosport (optional test day August 26)
  • September 23 to 25 – Fall Classic at Mt. Tremblant
  • October 1,2 – Panoz/CASC Celebration at Mosport (optional test day September 30)

June 24th – 26th VARAC’s Vintage Racing Festival

The entry packages have been mailed to previous year entrants and the info is posted on the website. All we’re waiting for now is for you to send in your entry! This year’s G70+ grid plans on being the biggest ever and the weekend festivities second to none (as usual!) This year’s ‘entries to date’ are already growing – if you were at the festival last year you’ll even see a picture of your car posted next to the entry! www.varac.ca/Festival/Entries2005.htm Watch that link in the coming weeks as the excitement builds to our biggest event of the season!

2005 VARAC Driver’s Challenge

The race is on!!! Check out the latest version of VARAC’s Vintage Racer magazine to find out the details on the 2005 VARAC Driver’s Challenge. Seasonal points start tallying at our first race on May 14/15 so don’t say you weren’t warned!!! Start participating early to be the next Schumacher of VARAC…

Vintage Racer’s Group – a Sister G70+ class???

Group 70+ is going international??? Most of you may be familiar with the Vintage Racer’s Group (VRG www.vrgonline.org). They are the north-eastern-based Vintage organization that we’ve become very close to. Our like-minded missions (of restoring, preserving and re-enacting racing history) has led us to join forces on many accounts. This season’s races at Mt. Tremblant and BeaveRun Motorsports Complex are thanks to collaborations with VRG. As well, the AM-CAN Challenge was introduced as a friendly and fun competition between VARAC and VRG. As if that wasn’t exciting enough (VARAC’s grids are getting bigger, our events are getting more spectacular and there’s more variety in tracks) – VRG is now seriously considering adding a Group 70+ class to mirror VARAC’s Group 70+. WE’RE GROWING!!! I don’t think it’ll be long before we have an international class! How exciting is that??? More cars, more vintage specific events, more fun! Stay tuned…

UNLIMITED SPECTATORS at BARC-OC’s Ontario Grand Prix, April 30, May 1

While VARAC does not have an official grid at the BAR-OC Ontario Grand Prix at the end of April, Group 70+ cars are eligible to race on the Ontario Challenge Cup Sprints grid that weekend. In an earth-shattering attempt to ‘open the doors’, BARC is allowing racers to bring as many spectators as they want – free of charge! That’s right – you do not have to pay extra fees after receiving your usual two free crew tickets for the regional weekend. Invite as many people as you want – family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, potential sponsors – the list goes on and on. All BARC is asking is that you email David Hilton (crusher45@powergate.ca) your car number and the number of tickets you would like. (Tickets must be picked up by noon each day.) How’s that for a bold and beautiful move forward?

Driver’s Checklist

There’s still lots of time to submit your race paperwork. Here’s the checklist:

And last but not least…

  • IMPORTANT TECHNICAL NOTE – just to remind drivers that G70+ cars must have a drive shaft restraining hoop as per the CASC regulations (especially aimed at cars with long drive shafts)
  • Players Challenge Firebird for Sale: One of 26 built at GM Motorsport for the Players Challenge Series. 400hp fuel injected, 5 spd transmission, limited slip “locker” diff, roll cage, fire system, racing seats, rust free – stored inside since new and untouched since last raced at the 1996 Molson Indy in Toronto. (Runs on pump gas, has ownership papers and can be road driven). Price is $12,895, contact John Greenwood (haggisbasher@sympatico.ca)
  • Attention genuine IMSA Cars! A new Historic IMSA Registry has emerged – dedicated to preserving the great cars of IMSA’s Golden era. If you have a genuine IMSA car – check it out at www.imsa-registry.com

Group 70+ is a VARAC promoted racing class that currently celebrates the history of racing from 1973 to 1987. VARAC is the association of vintage racecars in Canada that celebrates the passion of preserving, restoring and racing vintage racecars.

You're on this email list because somewhere along the line you expressed an interest in VARAC's Group 70+, perhaps in the capacity of driver, organizer, spectator or just plain keener trying to keep on top of things in the racing world. Let me know if you don't want to be on the list anymore, or feel free to pass it on to others who might be interested.
