VARAC G70+ Updates and News
May 2006

The season has begun! It was really exciting to dust off the cobwebs and get race cars out to Dunnville. The first race is at the end of this week – May 13, 14th at Mosport! Are you ready??? This issue is jammed packed full of information… don’t hesitate to forward us any questions you might have. Also – if it’s your first time out – let us know and we’ll help you through the process and introduce you to all our friends.

Are You Ready for the Season???

Okay… so you have the car ready. You checked that you can still fit into your driver’s suit after the winter hibernation. You renewed your VARAC membership and reserved your race number. You got your 2006 CASC-OR license in the mail. You even fixed a couple of those nasty little items that were bugging you at the end of last season and you promised to fix over the winter (for me it was giving the old rusty trailer a fresh coat of Tremclad - finally!). BUT most importantly have you brushed up on your racing rules??? As a licensed race car driver it is your responsibility to be familiar with the rules and regulations that govern you while you are at an event AND on the track. For VARAC G70+’ers that means the following:

  • CASC-OR General Competition Rules www.casc.on.ca/documents/regulations/06GCR.pdf
  • CASC-OR Race Regulations www.casc.on.ca/documents/regulations/06RaceRegs.pdf (Note that all safety regulations apply to VARAC cars as well!)
  • VARAC G70+ Rules and Regulations www.varac.ca/technical.html
  • VARAC G70+ Eligibility Rules – these are the period specific rules and regulations that your car is emulating to be eligible for Group 70+. We have copies of most FIA, SCCA and CASC-OR rule sets between 1973 and 1987 – just ask and we can bring you a copy to the track. It is your responsibility to ensure that your car is period eligible. After all – historic passion is what the fun of VARAC is all about!

Event Report - VARC Fun and Test Day, Dunnville, April 29 (www.dunnvilleautodrome.com)

What a great turnout – and FANTASTIC weather to spend the day outdoors with your race car J. The Dunnville event was a great opportunity for everyone to test out their cars and get their annual tech. We also managed to brush up on our social skills and practice the fine skills of bench racing – just in time for the season opener. It was really encouraging to see the new G70+ cars that we’ve been emailing with over the winter – welcome! And congratulations on getting your cars ready for the track (that always seems to be the toughest part.) Many thanks to the VARAC coordinators and scrutineers for all their hard work.

Next Up – BEMC Spring Trophy Races, Mosport (May 13/14)

Next weekend is our first event! Did you know that this is BEMC’s 56th annual Spring Trophy Race? There’s an interesting little article on the history of this event on CASC-OR’s website www.casc.on.ca/documents/eventdocs/progstr06.pdf

VARAC Vintage Festival – TRANS AM Feature (June 23/24/25)

The 27th Annual International Racing Festival is celebrating 40 years of Trans-Am racing! Most G70+ cars will be eligible for the feature race. Make sure you spread the word with your racing friends who have eligible cars – this will be yet another exciting festival year! Entry packages have been mailed out. www.varac.ca/Festival/fest_welcome.html if you didn’t receive one. Volunteers are needed – don’t be shy! www.britishcarenthusiast.com/VARAC/volunteer.html

Because of the large number of ‘guests’ coming to the VARAC Festival – there are special considerations for race numbers. Note that if you have a registered car number with your VARAC membership, this number is only protected until June 5th. For ALL entries received after June 5th, car numbers will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. So get your entries in by June 5th to protect your number! And of course to fill up the “Who’s Going” entry list! ( www.varac.ca/Festival/Entries2006.htm )

A message from Walter Davies – VARAC’s own incredible promotions director…

“Last year, a number of members sponsored events at our Festival – their contributions “took some of the financial heat” off VARAC and allowed us to run the outstandingly successful event. This year, we’d like to do even better so we’re inviting everybody to help us in sponsorship for this year’s Festival. No contribution is too small, and all contributions are gratefully received and well used by the Festival Planning team to make our Festival the best on the Vintage circuit. We have packages from $50 to over $1000 – I invite you to join us in sponsoring this year’s event.” Please contact Walter Davies at elva7racer@rogers.com for more details.

Toronto Molson Grand Prix Update (July 7/8/9)

Time Warp Racing in association with the Toronto Grand Prix Association has announced The ATTO Canadian Vintage GT Challenge race that will take place July 7, 8 and 9 at the Toronto Molson Grand Prix. Many Group 70+ cars along with select SVRA Group 6 cars will be competing in this exciting event. Contact Jonathon Brett (twr9@execulink.com) for more information.

VARAC Membership and Group 70+ Car Registration Forms

Be sure to renew your VARAC membership and racing number for the 2006 season. Membership forms can be found at www.varac.ca/membership.html . Group 70+ race numbers are now registered as part of VARAC’s membership application.

In addition to membership, Group 70+ car registration forms need to be filled out. If we don’t have yours on file (or your car has changed since you sent it in), please fill out the form and fax/email to Jonathon Brett. (www.varac.ca/technical.html)

VARAC Group 70+ Rules and Regulations

Note that there are NO changes to Group 70+ Rules and Regulations for 2006 (other than the inclusion of the CASC-OR roll cage and fuel cell safety requirements which were already in effect). HOWEVER, if you take a look at page 14 of the March 2006 issue of Vintage Racer you will see a proposed motion for the 2007 season. This can be discussed throughout the 2006 season and will be voted on at the annual AGM to be held on November 26, 2006.

2006 Group70+ Schedule

Compete for the VARAC Drivers Challenge in 2006! Group 70+ break-out Mosport lap times are as follows: Group E (up to 1:38.000), Group F (1:38.001 to 1:41.000), Group G (over 1:41.001); Don’t let the lap times intimidate you – there’s a big variance in our speeds. We’re a fun and friendly group and you can win the championship through participation and a mechanically sound car!!!)

At this exciting race weekend Jaguar (any model or year) is the featured marque. In addition there will be a BMW/Porsche Challenge Cup race (any model or year). Many of our VARAC vintage/historic comrades will be attending this race along with our friends from VRG. www.cloverleaf-auto.com/beaver.htm for more information.
  • Check out the complimentary spectator tickets for the BEMC weekend (see attached) – Aram Tourikian’s beautiful BMW M1 made the grade!

Group 70+ is a VARAC promoted racing class that currently celebrates the history of racing from 1973 to 1987. VARAC is the association of vintage racecars in Canada that celebrates the passion of preserving, restoring and racing vintage racecars.

You're on this email list because somewhere along the line you expressed an interest in VARAC's Group 70+, perhaps in the capacity of driver, organizer, spectator or just plain keener trying to keep on top of things in the racing world. Let me know if you don't want to be on the list anymore, or feel free to pass it on to others who might be interested.
